User doubts about wearing contact lenses and Covid-19 is growing more and more as the pandemic intensifies.

Specialists are sought continuously to answer questions and provide information about eye health in times of coronavirus.

Some, however, for fear of becoming contaminated, end up not using their contact lenses, which are a safe and effective way of correcting vision for millions of people.

With a few necessary precautions, you can easily use your best brand contact lenses in Pakistan without the risk of contracting Covid-19, and that is what we are going to talk about in this article!

What is Covid-19?

Covid-19 is a disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, whose clinical picture ranges from asymptomatic infections to severe respiratory conditions.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), most of those infected (about 80%) recover without needing special treatment, and approximately 20% of cases may require hospital care because they have difficulty breathing.

Of these cases, approximately 5% may need support for the treatment of respiratory failure (ventilatory support).

The symptoms of the disease can range from a simple cold to severe pneumonia. The most common symptoms are:

  • cough;
  • fever;
  • coryza;
  • sore throat;
  • difficulty breathing.

Now the question arises; Do contact lenses transmit Covid-19?

As this is an unprecedented pandemic, many doubts may arise.

Going straight to the point: no, contact lenses do not pose a transmission risk for Covid-19. However, users must maintain good hygiene habits when handling them.

Both to place and to remove them; it is necessary to touch the face. This is an act that can potentially spread pathogens, such as Covid-19, over the face.

According to the Ministry of Health, transmission occurs from one sick person to another, or through close contact through:

  • touch of the handshake;
  • droplets of saliva;
  • sneeze;
  • cough;
  • phlegm;
  • contaminated objects or surfaces, such as cell phones, tables, door handles, toys, computer keyboards, etc.

In the case of contact lens wearers, the most significant risk is, therefore, in the hands. So, take your cleaning seriously!

Before handling your contact lenses, you should wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, followed by manual drying with paper towels.

The process must be repeated before each contact lens insertion and removal.

If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol (gel alcohol is the most common).

Besides, you should avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth if your hands have been washed for a long time. In fact, in Covid-19 times, avoid touching your face in any situation.

What the experts say

The Brazilian Society of Ophthalmology (SBO) does not ask people to stop using it but recommends that care should be taken with hand and lens cleaning.

In an article published in the newspaper O Globo, ophthalmologist Mariana Dantas Maia, an expert in eye plastic surgery, confirmed that users tend to put their hands more in their eyes.

We see no need to ban the use. But care must be taken with them: wash your hands with soap and water before touching the lens, wash them only with the protein remover, keep and change the liquid at least once a day in the storage box, do not use the lens for more than 12 hours straight, and use lubricant without preservatives or eye drops whenever possible“, said the expert.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that primary hygiene care is essential to ensure the safe use of lenses in combating Covid-19 and eliminating the risk of contracting infections.

Care to keep contact lenses away from the coronavirus

In Covid-19 times, care with hand cleaning must be increased.

1 – Handle the lenses correctly

Wash your hands thoroughly when handling your contact lenses. Preferably use a bar of unscented and antibacterial soap.

2 – Store the lenses properly

Store the lenses in the case and wet them with the proper solution so that they are disinfected.

The container in which you keep your contact lenses must also always be clean. In that case, you can use soap and water. Allow drying thoroughly before using it again. Do this at least once a week.

3 – Respect the time of use of your lenses

Experts recommend using lenses for about 12 to 16 hours a day, at most, and that they are removed at night. There are even those who advise choosing a day of the week to give your eyes a break and not use them.
